About

CAIT MCMAHON PhD. OAM

As an innovator, thought leader, and skilled educator, I am one of the few psychologists who have dedicated over 30 years to working with truth-seekers in the media industry, human rights and research fields. My journey has been marked by a commitment to transparency and authenticity, recognising them as fundamental principles from which to operate. Throughout my career I have collaborated extensively with newsrooms, alongside journalists, journalist unions, human rights and research organisations focusing on maintaining psychological safety in the face of extreme stress and trauma. As well as supporting those in daily news I have also assisted organisations to support staff verifying war crimes; significant human right violations and historians cataloging historical trauma.

In 2016, I was honored with the Australian civic distinction, the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for my commitment to the mental health of journalists and the broader media community. Beyond the award, I authored one of the pioneering research pieces on journalists and trauma in 1993. This early work laid the foundation for a subsequent PhD in the same field, enriching my insights and expertise in supporting those exposed to the unique challenges within the media and human rights landscape.

Having served as the Founding Managing Director of the Dart Centre Asia Pacific (2003-2021), a project of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, I spearheaded its growth from the ground up. My role included creating foundational training and consulting content that has left an enduring impact on the industry.

Today, I am an Honorary Fellow of Phoenix Australia, Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health, at the University of Melbourne and work as an independent consultant. My focus remains unwavering—I believe in supporting those who hold power to account. I work in partnership with organisations and individuals, drawing on my wealth of experience to enhance their natural resilience, ensuring they can continue their vital work in the face of adversity. In 2024, alongside proud Warlpiri woman Rachael Hocking, I have received a Churchill Fellowship to study Indigenous mental health overseas.

My journey reflects a passion for elevating the mental health discourse within the media and ‘information integrity’ fields. With a foundation built on research, leadership, and collaboration, I look forward to continuing to contribute to the psychological fitness for these specialists. Together, we can foster environments that prioritize mental health, allowing individuals and organisations to thrive in their pursuit of truth and accountability.
